Van driver falls asleep at wheel, crashes into poles in Mattituck

A livery van driver fell asleep at the wheel Sunday morning and crashed into two light poles along Route 25 in Mattituck, Southold Town Police said.

The driver, Katherine Lobbe, 53, of Kings Park was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by the Mattituck Fire Department, where she is being treated for minor injuries, according to police.

The crash, which occurred just after 5 a.m. at the New Suffolk Ave. intersection, caused a brief power outage int the area after one of the utility poles snapped in half, police said.

A passenger in the van, Georgia Panagopoulas, 51, of East Marion was not injured in the accident. No charges were filed in the incident, police said.
