Lifelong Greenport resident John Michael Montgomery died suddenly Jan. 23. He was 76 years old.
He was born April 17, 1936, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport to Anne (Kijoski) and Christopher Montgomery. A 1955 graduate of Greenport High School, he played center for its first undefeated (7-0) football team in 1953 and was named all-star center in 1954. He attended the U.S. Army Signal School and served in the Army Signal Corps from 1955 to 1958 and again from 1961 to 1962, attaining rank E-4, and was awarded the Korean Defense Medal. He married Phyllis May Halsey on June 6, 1971, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.
Mr. Montgomery worked at the Long Island Lighting Company in Riverhead for 38 years.
He served as commander of American Legion Burton Potter Post No. 185 and belonged to several organizations, including Catholic War Veterans Post No. 730 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, the John Birch Society and Local 1049 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was vice president of the Stirling Historical Society, volunteered with the Dominican Sisters and was very active in community support.
Mr. Montgomery loved his grandchildren and enjoyed playing bingo and feeding the animals.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Phyllis Montgomery, in 1983; and his daughter Judith Aurelia Montgomery on Oct. 3, 1980. He is survived by his children Ann Mount of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Mary Montgomery, Phyllis Montgomery and Elizabeth Morrison, all of Greenport, and John Montgomery of New York; his brothers, Christopher (Dorothy), of Greenport, and Donald (Lynn), of Cutchogue; his sisters, Ann Lundgren of Rego Park, N.Y., Peggy Krakowski (Martin) of Greenport and Judy Grigonis (Dick) of Southold; and seven grandchildren.
The family received visitors Jan. 25 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service was held Jan. 26 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, Father Thomas Murray and Monsignor Ellsworth Walden officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery.
