Ruth M. Zurawski

Ruth M. Zurawski of Aquebogue died Jan. 14, 2013, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead She was 81 years old.

Born Feb. 24, 1931, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, she was the daughter of Bertha and George Danowski.

Ruth attended Southold High School, where she was a cheerleader and sang in the choir. She graduated in 1949.

She married Edward W. Zurawski Sr. at St. Isidore R.C. Church on July 29, 1950. They settled in Riverhead, where they raised a family of four children.

She worked at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Riverhead for more than 25 years.

A devout Catholic, Ruth loved gardening, cooking, crocheting and spending time with her family. She spent many Saturdays watching her son Bob race at Riverhead Raceway. Ruth was not only generous and caring with her family, but her door was also always open to friends and acquaintances who needed a hot meal or a place to stay.

Ruth was predeceased by her grandson Robert J. Zurawski Jr., in July 2002; her husband, Edward W. Zurawski Sr., in September 2006; and her son Robert J. Zurawski Sr., in August 2012. She is survived by her son Stephen and his wife, Cathy; her daughter, Diane Breitenbach, and her husband, Emil; her grandchildren Melissa Elco, Emil Breitenbach Jr., Kyle Breitenbach and Candice Zurawski; and her great-grandchildren, Emma Freeborn and Madison Elco. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Flannery of Virginia, and her brother, Edward Metski of Florida.

The family received friends Jan. 17 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 18 at St. Isidore R.C. Church, Father Robert Kuznik officiating. Interment followed at St. Isidore R.C. Cemetery.
