Mattituck’s wrestlers all fall on first day of states

The superb wrestling career of Mattituck senior Tomasz Filipkowski came to an end Friday night in Albany.

A three-time county champion, Filipkowski lost his first two matches at Times Union Center in the Division II 170-pound bracket of the New York State Wrestling Championships. Filipkowski lost in the final seconds of his wrestleback match against John Messinger of Putnam Valley (Section I). Filipkowski led 3-0 before Messinger chipped away with a pair of points from the second into the third period.

Trailing 3-2, Messinger secured a takedown with about three seconds left as Filipkowski tried to free himself out of bounds to lock up a 4-3 win. Filipkowski lost 1-0 in the first round against Daniel Smith of South Jefferson (Section III).

Two Mattituck wrestlers picked up one win in the wrestlebacks Friday.

Senior Chris Baglivi, in his second trip to states, pinned Dustin Mackenzie in the second period of his first wrestleback at 195. Baglivi lost his first match, 7-4, to Matt Booth.

In his second wrestleback match Friday night Baglivi was pinned in 4:43 by Dusty Lewis of Salamanca to end his season.

At 138, junior Bobby Becker won his first wrestleback, 7-4, against Joel Rosko of Campbell Savona (Section V). His season ended with a 6-1 loss to Taylor Jones of Pal-Mac (Section V).

He lost his first match of the day, 16-8, against Drew Longo of Ardsley (Section I).
