Driver of SUV taken to hospital after rollover in Greenport

CARRIE MILLER PHOTO | Police said the driver of this Jeep was not seriously injured after Friday’s crash on Main Road in Greenport.

A one-car rollover accident that downed a utility pole in Greenport Friday afternoon sent a man to a local hospital and left one house without power, Southold police said.

A black Jeep Cherokee was headed eastbound on Main Road at about 2:45 p.m. when it crashed into the pole and rolled over, said Detective Sergeant John Shinning.

The driver, who told police he had fallen asleep, suffered minor injuries and was brought to Eastern Long Island Hospital, police said.

Main Road was closed for about an hour in both directions from Chapel Lane to Moores Lane, Greenport fire officials said.
