Cops: Greenport man threatened 69-year-old victim with knife

Southold Town police arrested a Greenport man after he threatened to kill a 69-year-old man with a knife Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Police said they received a 911 call about 2:20 p.m. from a Third Street address, where a 69-year-old man, also of Greenport, reported Robert Smith, 54, had picked up a kitchen knife, held it in his direction and told him he was going to kill him, police said.

Mr. Smith was arrested, transported to Southold police headquarters and held for a Justice Court appearance, police said.

He was charged with menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.

No additional details were available.

Mr. Smith was also arrested in May 2012 after he violated an order of protection by entering a Greenport residence he is prohibited from, and was arrested on similar charges in April 2012, according to records.
