Three people were hospitalized Thursday morning after a car collided with a crossover SUV on Sound Avenue, flipping the vehicle at least once, authorities said.

A woman driving BMW X3 was headed west on Sound Avenue near the Riverhead town line about 7 a.m. when a Toyota Camry pulled out of a driveway, crashing into the SUV, a Southold police officer at the scene said.

The BMW flipped “at least once” before coming to rest near the road, said Mattituck fire chief Jason Haas. Mattituck and Jamesport firefighters responded to the scene and shut down the road in both directions while they rescued the victims.

The driver of the BMW and a man and a woman from the Toyota were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center, Mr. Haas said. They were not seriously injured, he added.

“I didn’t think any of the [injuries] were life-threatening,” Mr. Haas said.

Jamesport fire police kept Sound Avenue closed from Herricks Lane to Aldrich Lane as the scene was cleared. By 8:20 a.m. the road was reopened.
