Joseph P. Oates

Joseph P. Oates, a resident of Waterwood, Texas, since 1996 and formerly of Houston, Texas, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, April 4, 2013.

Joe was born on Long Island, N.Y., Oct. 25, 1938. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathleen. Also surviving are his children, Joseph Eugene and Amy and Dan Casagrande and their children, Grace Kathryn and Daniel; and sisters Carol Power and Donna (Ray) Charnews.

Joe was always very active in both his community and his church. He served his country as a submariner in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1966. He volunteered at the Precinct 8 Election Board and was later appointed precinct judge. Joe served on the Waterwood Improvement Association Board, the MUD Board and the fire department and was an officer in the Waterwood Security Force. He attended Saint Stephen the Martyr R.C. Church, where he served as president of the Pastoral Council for five years, was an usher and helped establish the Men’s Club.

A wake service was held April 9 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 10 at Saint Stephen the Martyr R.C. Church.

Private cremation followed the funeral Mass.
