Juan “John” Arroyo

Juan “John” Arroyo of Greenport died April 14 at age 51.

He was born in Brooklyn July 4, 1961, to Ginin Torres and Juan M. Arroya and married Claudette F. Welch in Mattituck on Oct. 17, 2010.

Mr. Arroyo was the owner/operator of Arroyo Landscaping in Greenport for 10 years.

He excelled in sports at school, loved to play baseball and basketball and enjoyed working with his hands. A traveler, he welcomed with enthusiasm anything that was a challenge, and enjoyed catering to others.

Predeceased in 2005 by his mother-in-law, Lenora Johnson, Mr. Arroyo is survived by his loving wife, Claudette Welch of Greenport; his mother, Ginin Torres, and stepfather, Cheo, both of Puerto Rico; his loving stepdaughter, Simone Clay of Mastic; his stepsons, Nick Welch, serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Florida, and Eric Allaway, serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in South Korea; a beautiful granddaughter, Serenity Creighton of Mastic; his sisters, Lucrecia, Vivian, Edna, Paula and Nancy; his brothers, Pedro (Pete), Manuel (Manny) and William (Willy); and 19 loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A service will take place Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, the Rev. Michael Jackson, Elder Jimmy Smiley and Pastor Dozier officiating. Interment will be at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport, with a graveside service officiated by the same clergy.
