Dorothy C. Ulrich

Dorothy C. Ulrich of Southold and Venice, Fla., went home to be with her Lord on May 5, 2013. She was 90.

She was born March 11, 1923, in Jersey City, N.J., to Theodore W. and Helen (Demont) Crawbuck. After graduating from Snyder High School, she was employed as a secretarial stenographer at the long lines division of American Telephone and Telegraph in New York City. It was in 1946 that she and her husband, Joseph P. Ulrich, moved to Southold, where he began his career in the marine industry.

For a short period of time, Dorothy was a business representative at the New York Telephone Co. in Riverhead, N.Y. Eventually Ulrich Marine was founded and, although she had expected to be a housekeeper, mother, club woman and bridge player, she began to spend half the week as greeter, saleslady, secretary and bookkeeper as the business grew.

She enjoyed meeting the customers, who later became friends, golfing and bridge companions. She and her husband spent winter vacations in Europe, the Islands, Alaska, California, Arizona, Hawaii and Florida, where, in retirement in 1987, they began to spend half the year. She was a member of North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue and Jacaranda West Country Club in Venice, Fla., and was a former member of Minnepaug Club on Eastern Long Island. She lived a full and active life with friends in Southold and Florida and 59 years with her loving husband, who predeceased her.

Survivors include her daughter Pamela (Lonnie) Luce of San Angelo, Texas; her son, J. Philip (Kristine Rosage) Ulrich of Greenwich, N.Y.; and her daughter Su, who has been her loving companion. Other family members include grandsons G. Sean Luce and wife of Belton, Texas; Jeffrey K. Luce and wife of Plano, Texas; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
