Loretta Cullen

Loretta “Laura” Cullen of Cutchogue, on Monday, May 13, 2013, surrounded by her children, quietly passed into her husband’s waiting spirit. Fifty-two years together created a bond that death could not break. We were blessed to have parents who cared for each other as much as they did their children, grandchildren, family and an armload of friends.

Born in Brooklyn, the oldest of 12, to George and Loretta (Warwick) Reimann; predeceased by her husband, John; survived by her children John (Donna), Laurie (Vasken) Shahinian and Sharyn (Luis) Serrano and seven grandchildren, Patrick, John L., Kaitlyn, Lauryn, Michael, Lucine and Pileigh.

If we asked Laura, “What is your favorite word?” she would say family. She was a woman of words and used them (or not) to make a point. John and Laura built a life that any family would be proud to be a part of. We are a shining example of a life and love well lived.

Some of Laura’s other major accomplishments: A life member of Centereach Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, being the first female sworn into the Centereach Fire Department Ambulance Company, earning her AEMT license, ultimately becoming Captain and ending her dedicated career as an honorary member. She became Treasurer for the Centereach Fire District and served well over 30 years as secretary to the Benevolent.

She was a nurse’s aide, loved watching “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” sailing away on cruises (even though she was afraid of water), traveling to Florida and Arizona to visit those she loved and doing her crossword puzzles every day. She always had a smile, a joke, a compliment or words of comfort, depending on the circumstances. She will be wearing her finest hat when she sits with the Lord for a nice cup of tea.

Arrangements were handled by Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
