Southold Town to host small business forum next week

Aiming to give local businesses a hand, the Southold Economic Development Committee will host a forum to provide information and resources to area businesses next Thursday.

The forum will address several topics including marketing, social media, developing a family succession plan and the implications of the Affordable Care Act and alternatives for accessing affordable health care for employees.

“One of the goals of the committee for 2013 was to create this business forum,” Southold Town Special Projects Coordinator Phillip Beltz said. “Businesses are struggling and the world changes quickly. This forum will provide them with current information.”

Town Supervisor Scott Russell will provide opening remarks ,followed by a discussion of the proposed Industrial/Commercial Incentive Plan, which would provide tax abatements for industrial and commercial buildings for periods of up to 25 years.

Guests will have the choice of attending one or two seminars. One will discuss launching a start-up business with an emphasis on marketing.  The session will feature Ian Wile of Kickstarter.com, an online platform that helps young businesses raise capital.

There will also be a seminar on business and succession planning.

The forum is scheduled for Thursday, June 20 at 6 p.m. at Peconic Lane Community Center.
