Cops: Southold priest found at bottom of his own pool

A 78-year-old priest died after being found at the bottom of his Southold pool Friday afternoon on Maple Lane, Southold Town police said.

Police and Southold Fire Department members attempted to resuscitate Monsignor Gerald Langelier before he was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital, but were unsuccessful. The incident occurred around 4:57 p.m. Friday, police said.

Langelier was pastor emeritus at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills. Funeral arrangements are still to be determined, according to a message posted on the church’s website. He served as the fifth pastor of Our Lady of Mercy from 1984 to 2007.
