Margaret Croasdale

Margaret “Peggy” Croasdale of Southold died peacefully July 20, 2013, at the age of 84.

She was born Sept. 19, 1928, to Christina (Goebel) and Thomas Hickey of Malverne, N.Y. She was a graduate of Marianapolis College in Montreal, Canada, and received a master’s degree in education from Hofstra University. While at college, Peggy spent her summers as a waitress at the famed Hotel Tadoussac along the St. Lawrence and Saguenay rivers in Quebec.

Peggy was a beloved kindergarten teacher in Syosset and in 1958 married Dan Croasdale, the love of her life. Together Dan and Peg spent 51 wonderful years together, raising four children in Malverne, and shared many a good time with friends and family in Southold and Windham, N.Y.

Peggy was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Altar Society and volunteered for the American Cancer Society, the Holly A. Patterson Nursing Home and the Cub Scouts. She spent many summers volunteering at the Southold Yacht Club, serving on the entertainment committee and as rear commodore.

In 1990, Peggy and Dan retired to Southold, where they had summered since 1968. Peggy was an active member of the St. Patrick Rosary Altar Society and a volunteer at Mercy High School and the Southold Historical Society, where she enjoyed giving tours. She will be so lovingly remembered for her love and devotion to her husband, her family and her faith.

Peggy was predeceased by her beloved Danny in November 2009. She is survived by her children, Mary and Michael Mellor of Wrentham, Mass., Joseph and Sherri Croasdale of Cold Spring Harbor, Maggie and JC Merrill of Southold and Chrissy and Walter Berry of Southold; her grandchildren, Liam and Grace Mellor, Brendan and Alison Croasdale, Siobhan and Fiona Merrill and Noah, Samantha and Brittney Berry; and her great-grandson, Bennett Detrick. She was loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and all those who benefited from Peggy’s open door and generosity.

The family will receive friends at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue on Tuesday, July 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church, Southold, with interment at St. Patrick Cemetery.
