Marilyn Lois Grumet

Marilyn Lois Grumet of Cutchogue and Manhattan died July 12. She was 72 years old.

Born April 3, 1941, Marilyn grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa., before moving to Weirton, W. Va. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University with a major in English, then taught English in Columbus, Ohio, and received a Master of Arts degree from Ohio State.

Marilyn moved to Manhattan in 1967 to teach English at Rye (N.Y.) High School. Over 32 years, she gave hundreds of students a deep love of reading. Many have said that they will be rereading some of the books from her classes in her memory.

Upon retiring in 1999, Marilyn divided her time between Manhattan and Cutchogue, where she loved her water view, kayaking in the creeks and making new friends. She enjoyed knitting, reviewing new books for Bookspan and, most of all, winning ribbons with her bearded collie, Margo, at agility competitions.

Marilyn is survived by her brother, Louis R. (Barbara) Grumet of Manhattan; their daughters, Lisa Grumet (Mark Daly) and Debbie Grumet (Bob Groppe); nieces Megan, Devon and Gwen; and her many friends in Manhattan, Rye and Cutchogue, who miss her sense of humor, generosity, sharp wit and knowledge of literature.

Funeral arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
