Mazie Gilbert Lindsey

Former Orient resident Mazie Gilbert Lindsey died July 4 at her home in Rahway, N.J. She was 82.

She was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to Annie and King Gilbert. Ms. Lindsey moved to Orient in 1943 and graduated from Orient Grammar School in 1945, continuing on to Greenport High School, from which she graduated in 1949. In 1951 Mazie married Levi Paul Lindsey Sr. and gave birth to her only child, Levi Paul “Peter” Lindsey Jr.

As a teen Ms. Lindsey babysat for several families in Orient, including the Lathams, the Edwards and the Terrys. She remained close with the Terry family throughout her life.

She loved worshipping the Lord, family members said, as well as cooking, arts and crafts, music (especially classical) and children. And they also said she enjoyed a good couple of glasses of wine.

Ms. Lindsey was predeceased by her husband; her son; her brothers, Eddie and King Gilbert Jr.; and her sister Lillie Mae Green. She is survived by her sister Annie Louise Engleton and many nieces and nephews.

A service will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at Orient Congregational Church, the Rev. Ann Van Cleef officiating. Cremation was private.
