Former Southold resident Beatrice E. Psaki MacDonald of New Bern, N.C., died peacefully at home July 9, 2013, with her daughter, Maureen, by her side. She was 90.

Beatrice E. Psaki MacDonald

Mrs. MacDonald grew up in Forest Hills, one of six children. Her father was an M.D. and her mother an R.N. She attended Misericordia Nursing School in the Bronx, N.Y., and became a registered nurse. After she married and her children were older, she worked at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre and retired from the A. Holly Patterson Home in Uniondale. She also resided in North Merrick and Southold before retiring to New Bern in 1989.

She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren, and made sure she always had a crib set up for the babies to spend the night. She loved the water and the beautiful beaches of her beloved North Fork and was a Red Cross-certified swimmer.

She cherished her ’40s era music and memories of that time and always loved to dance. She was a Cub Scout den mother when her boys were small, an avid bowler, made awesome Halloween costumes and birthday party centerpieces and gave the best nursing care when her family was sick. Animals were always a part of her life, cats and dogs.

When she moved to New Bern, she was involved in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and volunteered at Craven Regional Medical Center. A member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, she was a rosary maker and helped with the church bulletins. She’ll be missed more than she could ever realize and loved even more.

Mrs. MacDonald was predeceased by her spouse of 55 years, Thomas N. MacDonald, and her son, Thomas F. MacDonald. She was the loving and devoted mother of Kevin M. MacDonald and his wife, Corrine, of Cutchogue, and beloved daughter, Maureen T. MacDonald of New Bern; adoring grandmother of Jason Z. MacDonald, Ethan T. MacDonald, Timothy P. MacDonald, Jennifer C. MacDonald Boese, Kelly J. MacDonald, Kathleen M. MacDonald, Jaimie L. MacDonald, Thomas J. MacDonald and Morgan E. Quirk; and great-grandmother of Isabella A. MacDonald, Adelaide G. Boese and Frederick H. Boese.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern. A funeral mass will be held Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in New Bern. A memorial reception will follow for friends. A service will be held on the North Fork in fall of 2013.
