Martha Spiess

Martha Spiess passed away July 31, 2013, due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. She was 88 years old and had been a resident at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport for six years.

Predeceased by her husband, Raymond, in 1990, Martha moved to Riverhead from her longtime home in Queens Village, N.Y., after retiring from a career with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Those who knew her were witness to her immense pride in her Irish heritage and Catholic faith.

She is survived by her son, James, and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, of Southold.

A Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated on Aug. 2, 2013, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead by Bishop Emil Wcela and Martha’s dear friend, the Rev. John P. Maloney. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.
