John F. Irving

John F. Irving, a 17-year resident of Nassau Point, Cutchogue, died July 30 at his home. He was 71 years old.

He was born April 29, 1942, in Rhinebeck, N.Y., to Muriel (Payton) and John F. Irving Sr. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1969 and in the New York State Army National Guard from 2002 to 2007. He and his wife, Mary Anne, were married in 1994 in Port Jefferson.

Mr. Irving was a retired assistant deputy warden with the New York City Department of Corrections and was also retired from Sunrise Coach Lines in Greenport.

Family members said he enjoyed model trains and studying history and genealogy. He especially loved his German shepherd, Sabre.

He is survived by his wife; his children, Athena Geraci of Newburgh, N.Y., and Alexis Scarfogliero-Odessa of Florida; his stepchildren, T.R. Schilb of Hingham, Mass., Laura Shepherd of St. James, Deborah Schilb of Huntington and Kristina Miller of Cumming, Ga.; his brother Charles, of Suffern, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Robert.

The family received visitors Aug. 1 and 2 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Cremation was private.
