Alison Trenholme Hogle Hegeman died Aug. 11 at The Shores at Peconic Landing, where she had recently celebrated her 97th birthday.

Alison Hegeman

She was born July 1, 1916, in Montreal, Canada, to George and Gertrude Cayford Trenholme. Her early years were spent in New York City, where her father was with the British War Office. After World War I the family moved to the Main Line area near Philadelphia, where her mother lectured at the Philadelphia Art Museum.

Ms. Hegeman graduated in 1934 from Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., but she soon returned to live in Montreal. In 1939 she married Maurice Hogle, a major in the Canadian Grenadier Guards.

Ms. Hegeman’s life included working for more than 30 years for Union Carbide in Texas City, Texas. After retiring from Union Carbide, she moved to Long Island, to which her son-in-law had been transferred. When her family was transferred again, to Barbados, she elected to stay on Long Island. She shared a home with Harriet Tuthill in Greenlawn and then moved with Harriet to Mattituck in 1998.

At age 79, Ms. Hegeman enrolled at Empire State College at Old Westbury, from which she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998 at age 82. In February 2001, she married Leslie B. Hegeman at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck.

Ms. Hegeman was very active in local community organizations. She was a member of the Peconic Bay Power Squadron for many years, serving as editor of its monthly newsletter, “The Peconic Bay Tell-Tale.” She also served as its chaplain. She raised thousands of dollars for Maureen’s Haven through her first books, “The Best is Yet to Be” and “From Here to There.” In 2005, she was elected to the board of Community Action of Southold Town and wrote her third book, “Act III,” for the benefit of that organization.

In 2007, she was elected to the Women’s Hall of Fame of Suffolk County. She received many proclamations from county dignitaries for her community work and also received one from Southold Supervisor Scott Russell in 2011 for her outstanding work in Southold over the years.

For many years Ms. Hegeman was a lay Eucharistic minister at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, and was also a Third Order Franciscan. Her latest honor was conferred on her in 2012 when she was named “Woman of the Year” of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Long Island.

Ms. Hegeman is survived by her husband, Leslie; her children, Thomas Hogle of Houston, Texas, Edward Hogle, of Tonawanda, N.Y., and Susan Ovies of Hendersonville, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Burial will take place at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo.

A memorial service will be held at Peconic Landing at a later date.
