A lifeguard performed CPR on a 6-year-old boy that had been drowning in a pool at Cliffside Resort condominiums in Greenport Thursday afternoon, Southold Town police said.

Police responded at about 2 p.m. to a report of CPR in progress. Michael Liegey, 20, of Southold started CPR on the child and was able to get him breathing again, police said. The child, who police did not identify, was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by the Greenport Fire Department, police said.

The boy was conscious and breathing at that time, police said. An updated condition on the child was not immediately available.

A Cliffside spokesperson offered the following statement Thursday evening.

“The safety of our guests is a top priority here at the Cliffside Resort,” said Thomas Herrmann, general manager of the resort. “We commend our entire staff for perfectly exercising our emergency response plan and wish the young boy a speedy recovery.”
