Máire Eilis Beggs

Máire Eilis Beggs of Mattituck died Sept. 11, 2013. She was 73 years old.

She was born Nov. 12, 1939, in Dublin, Ireland, to Michéal O’Dhoibhilin and Caitríona (Doherty) Ni Dhoibhilin. She graduated from Scoil Caitríona, Dominican College, Dublin, and earned certification from the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) for her Montessori early childhood studies in London, England, and advanced-level studies in Bergamo, Italy. In 1967, while studying in Bergamo, Máire and George Eaton Beggs of Boston, Mass., were married.

In 1996, George and Máire moved to the East End and lived on Shelter Island and in Riverhead. They moved to Mattituck in 2003. Máire and George spent 30 years in Montessori education, team-teaching and co-directing schools, including 20 years in Bethlehem, Pa., where they taught and co-directed Alcott Montessori School (preschool through 8th grade). In 1999, Máire joined Albertson Marine in Southold, where she was employed as office manager until retiring in April 2013.

Máire is survived by her loving husband, George, and their sons, Stuart, of Kenvil, N.J., and Alex, of Port Jefferson Station; her sister, Caitríona Ni Dhoibhilin of Fort Plain, N.Y.; her brother Michéal O’Dhoibhilin, his wife, Milla, and their daughters, Aisling, Jennifer and Neasa (but, sadly, Máire was predeceased by Baby Aoife and beautiful Niamh) of Dublin, Ireland, and her brother-in-law, Dudley Damon Beggs and his wife, Gail, of Hershey’s Mill, Pa.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt Sept. 14 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, where Máire was a devoted communicant and sang in the church choir. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.
