RED DEVILS 16, PORTERS 3

The setting and the electric atmosphere were primed for a celebration. Purple and gold balloons festooned the stands at Greenport High School’s Dorrie Jackson Memorial Field. Some fans wore face paint in the school’s colors and hoisted signs. One of the largest crowds in recent memory turned out to watch the unbeaten Greenport/Southold/Mattituck football team make a bid for its sixth straight win in its homecoming game.

And then Center Moriches crashed the party.

An entertaining defensive battle went Center Moriches’ way Friday night as the Red Devils prevailed, 16-3, in the Suffolk County Division IV game. The only points they allowed were from a 22-yard field goal by John Drinkwater.

Tyrell Thomas hit Tarik Rountree on a 24-yard slant for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Clarence Trent deflated the Porters (5-1) and essentially sealed the result with his 48-yard touchdown run with 1 minute 44 seconds left in the game. Trent took the ball up the middle before bouncing to the outside, breaking several tackles in the process, and racing down the right sideline.

Thomas ran in both two-point conversions for Center Moriches (5-1).
