A. Gertrude Lenahan

A. Gertrude Lenahan of Mattituck died Oct. 20 surrounded by family. She was 96 years old,

She was born in 1917 in Bridgeport, Conn., the first of Antone and Josephine Slagas’ four children.

She attended Cutchogue School and worked as a caretaker and domestic for 74 years, until June 2013. Ms. Lenahan was a member of Sacred Heart Parish for many years. She married John Lenahan Nov. 19, 1939, at Sacred Heart Church in Cutchogue and attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck every Sunday, earning the distinction of being the oldest member of the parish. She was also a member of the Lithuanian Club.

Family members said Ms. Lenahan was a dynamic adventurer who loved new experiences, valued good friendships and enjoyed traveling, fine food, polka dancing, politics and using Skype. They also said she was very proud of her family and attended her grandchildren’s theater, dance and music concerts, including performances at Madison Square Garden.

Ms. Lenahan was predeceased by her husband and is survived by three children, Diane Fabb, John and David; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Memorial donations may be sent to Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson.
