Gerard Xavier Fitzgerald of Greenport died Oct. 15 at the age of 84.
He was born Jan. 22, 1929, in Bellerose to Bernard Joseph and Anna Annuciata (McGuire) Fitzgerald. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1947 and attended Columbia University before serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1952 as a private first class.
Mr. Fitzgerald served as director of construction for the Empire State Building. He enjoyed skiing and tennis and was an avid New York Yankees fan.
He was predeceased by three brothers.
A Mass was celebrated Oct. 18 at St. Agnes Church in Greenport, the Rev. Thomas P. Murray officiating. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
