The shock waves of the Greenport/Southold/Mattituck football team’s surprising 4-0 start were felt as far away as East Rutherford, N.J.

The New York Giants announced Monday Greenport coach Jack Martilotta was selected as “The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week,” following the Porters’ 33-0 win Friday night over Port Jefferson.

After a 13-game losing streak, the Porters have emerged this season as a playoff contender with a perfect start through the midway point of the season. This in a season where the Porters were projected to finish 13th out of 14 teams in Division IV.

Martilotta will receive a certificate of recognition signed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Giants head coach Tom Coughlin. The Porters will also receive $1,000 toward the football program.

The Giants will acknowledge Martilotta’s award with a stadium announcement during the team’s Oct. 21 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Martilotta is in his fifth season at the helm of the Porters.

The Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants’ continuing effort to promote youth football, a press release noted. The award is named after former Union High School (N.J.) coach Lou Rettino.

The Porters return to action Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game at The Stony Brook School. Greenport is currently tied for third place in Division IV power points with Shoreham-Wading River.

Last year, McGann-Mercy coach Jeff Doroski was selected for the New York Jets’ Coach of the Week award.
