The Greenport/Southold/Mattituck football team’s final home game of the regular season scheduled for Saturday afternoon against Hampton Bays was canceled this afternoon, Greenport athletic director Jim Caliendo said.

Hampton Bays forfeited the game, which will go down as the Porters’ sixth win of the season. Greenport finishes the regular season 6-2 in Division IV and will now prepare for a playoff game next week.

Caliendo said he found out the game would officially be canceled around 3 p.m. today. The football team was practicing this afternoon and Caliendo said the coaches were going to inform the players at the end of the practice.

This was the second game to be canceled today. The Southampton football team forfeited its home game tonight against McGann-Mercy. It’s unclear how the incidents are related, although Caliendo said he believed they were not. He didn’t have further details into why the game was canceled.

Both cancellations came as a shock to Greenport and Mercy. The Porters have enjoyed a thrilling season so far, winning their first five games before dropping their last two. Saturday was supposed to be the Senior Day.

Caliendo said as a positive, the unexpected week off could help some of the Porters recover from injuries.

“We’ll be ready to upset whoever we play,” Caliendo said.
