Boys Soccer: Mattituck, Southold to play for county titles today

The Southold and Mattituck boys soccer teams are both vying for county championships today. For the Tuckers, they’ll be aiming for a fourth straight Class B crown. For the Settlers, they’ll be looking to finally break through and win their first Class C title since 2008.

Southold kicks off the doubleheader at Diamond in the Pines in Coram at 2:30 p.m. against top-seeded Pierson/Bridgehampton. Mattituck will host its longtime rival Center Moriches at 5 p.m. Both games are a $6 admission.

The No. 2 Settlers are playing their first playoff game of the year. Southold and Pierson were the only ‘C’ schools to qualify for the postseason. While the Settlers won’t have to overcome Port Jefferson — the team that won the previous four ‘C’ titles — they’ll still face a formidable opponent in Pierson, which went 10-4-2 this year and 9-0-1 in League VIII. Pierson won both matches against Southold this year, each by a goal.

Mattituck won a thriller Wednesday in the ‘B’ semifinals against Southampton, 3-2, to advance into today’s final against No. 2 Center Moriches. It’ll be the third time the teams face this year. Mattituck won handily in the last meeting, 5-0.

Check back tonight for coverage of both games.
