John S. Tessier

John Sylvester Tessier, 98, died Nov. 4, 2013, in Greenport after a brief illness.

He was born and raised in Cohoes, N.Y., the son of Francis M. and Herminie (Blais) Tessier and the fourth of seven siblings. He attended Niagara University in Buffalo, followed by graduate school at Columbia University School of Optometry in New York.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Philadelphia and the USS Wake Island. In 1943, he married Dorothy M. Hill and settled in Garden City, where they raised four children.

Dr. Tessier practiced optometry for 35 years, with offices in Manhattan and Garden City. Upon retiring in 1979, he and Dorothy moved to East Marion and enjoyed boating, golf, gardening and playing bridge with their friends. Most of all, they loved participating in, and contributing to, the lives of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After Dorothy died in 1986, he married Evelyn McCall Steege, who died in 2002. He moved to Peconic Landing in Greenport, where he met and later married his third wife, Margery Fates, who died earlier in 2013.

Dr. Tessier is survived by his loving children, Thomas Tessier of The Villages, Fla., JoAnn Rose (William) of Collinsville, Conn., Jeffrey Tessier (Deborah) of Monkton, Md., and Elizabeth Johnson (David) of Cotuit, Mass.; his sister, Constance Allard of Falls Church, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes Church in Greenport followed by burial at St. Agnes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Arrangements are being handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home.
