George W. Francis

Lifelong Laurel resident George W. Francis passed away Nov. 2, 2013, at the VA Hospital in Northport. He was 54 years old.

George was born in Riverhead June 8, 1959, to Alma and William Francis and attended school in both Laurel and Mattituck.

After high school, he joined the Marines, serving from June 25, 1973, to June 6, 1975. Following his honorable discharge, he worked at various jobs, ranging from pool care and boat mechanics to the Crescent Duck Farm.

He is survived by two brothers, Curtis, of Westbury, and Dennis, of Flanders; his sons, George Jr. and Tony; his daughters, Angela and Kimberly; his daughter-in-law, Monika; his nieces, Bernadette Francis of Virginia, and Monica and Serena; two aunts, Helen Capell of Riverhead and Georgiana Francis of Riverhead; and cousins Donald Capell and Gary Bell.

Friends will be welcomed Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Homegoing services will be conducted by the Rev. Marvin Dozier of Unity Baptist Church in Mattituck. Interment will be Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11:30 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery, where the U.S. Marine Corps will render military honors.
