The National Weather Service is warning that a cold front moving through the area Monday night into Tuesday could dump a mix of rain and snow — or all snow — during the morning commute.

The front will result in “quickly dropping temperatures,” according to a NWS special weather statement.

Meteorologists are saying light rain showers are expected to form around midnight in areas west and north of New York City, with that precipitation pushing south and easterly into the early morning hours.

“As the colder temperatures move behind the front,” the statement reads. “A transition to a rain/snow mix or even all snow is expected. Generally during the period of the morning commute between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m.”

Though just a half inch at most is expected, the weather could still result in slippery roads and reduced visibilities, officials said.
