Hope N. Getches

Longtime Orient resident Hope N. Getches passed away at her son’s home in Rhode Island Nov. 22, 2013, just shy of her 94th birthday.

Hope was born in Hartford, Conn., Dec. 9, 1919, to Ehnatey and Francis (Herman) Nazaruk and moved to Greenport at age 5. She graduated from Greenport High School in 1938 and attended Pratt Institute from 1940 to 1942, graduating with a degree in costume design. From 1942 to 1945 Hope worked in the office of Brigham’s Shipyard in Greenport. She then went on to work from 1945 to 1956 at Butterick Company in Manhattan, where she headed up the pattern division.

Hope married Joseph P. Getches Nov. 17, 1956, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. They were married for 54 years. Hope and Joe lived in Greenport from 1956 to 1961 and then moved to Orient. Hope enjoyed sewing, baking and making braided rugs.

Predeceased by her husband in 2010 and daughter, Michelle, in 1995, Hope is survived by her son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Christie, of Matunuck, R.I., and granddaughter Lindsey Getches of Arlington, Va.
