Tears of joy streamed down the faces of the runners on Mattituck’s girls cross county team this fall when the official word came down: They were county champs. Again.

The cross country team won its second straight Class C title at Sunken Meadow State Park as the Tuckers tallied 39 points to finish ahead of Center Moriches. Freshman Melanie Pfennig was the top runner for Mattituck, completing the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes 2.99 seconds.

The county title earned Mattituck a trip to the state championship. Audrey Hoeg and Kaylee Bergen were the team’s captains during the season.
