Southold Town Police were canvasing New Suffolk Sunday afternoon in search of a man two teenage sisters said they saw in their backyard today.

Several police cars were patrolling the area near Main and Fourth streets while a K-9 unit searched the surrounding woods.

Officers said they were looking for a heavy-set white male in his early 30s with black hair who was wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans and brown work boots.

The search began after one of the two sisters — one 13 and the other 15 years old — called police to say she received a phone call on a cell phone from a man asking for her name shortly after 2 p.m.. No adults were home in the house at the time, but have since returned home.

The girls said they then saw a man fitting the above description in their backyard.

As of 4 p.m., several patrol cars remained in the area.

Police said the investigation was preliminary and that they had no further comment.
