Southold blotter: Hospital patient cuffed after punching employee

A patient at Eastern Long Island Hospital was placed in handcuffs after becoming disorderly while going through detox last Tuesday, police said.

Around 8 p.m., hospital staff reported that the 26-year-old patient from Northport was throwing items in the common area among other patients and then proceeded to punch an employee in the face, according to a police report.

The man was restrained until he calmed down, police said.

The employee chose not to press charges and the disorderly patient was transported to the Riverhead train station for a train to Holbrook.

• A Manorville woman was taken into custody after being busted for driving under the influence of alcohol Sunday night, Southold Police said.

Shannon Cutolo, 25, was stopped around 4 a.m. after crossing the yellow line into the arresting officer’s lane on Route 25 in Laurel, police said.

When the officer turned the car around in pursuit of Ms. Cutolo he saw her cross the solid white line on the right side of the roadway near Laurel Lake Winery, according to the a police report.

When Ms. Cutolo was stopped the officer reporter that she smelled of alcohol, her eyes were red and glassy, her speech was slurred and she was unsteady on feet. She failed several field sobriety testes administered at the scene, police said.

• A 22-year-old Southold woman was arrested for driving drunk on Thanksgiving, according to New York State Police.

Carolyn Wells was stopped for failing to maintain her lane while driving on Route 25 in Greenport and was found to be intoxicated, police said. She was charged with DWI, police said.

• A 25-year-old New Jersey man was arrested for drinking and driving Nov. 27, Southold Town Police said.

William John Granneman, of Califon, New Jersey, was stopped at around 10 p.m. for making an unsafe lane change while driving on Route 25 in Mattituck, police said.

Mr. Granneman failed several roadside sobriety tests and was arrested at the scene, according to a police report.

• A pile of leaves got caught in the muffler of a gas-powered blower causing a small brush fire in Southold Nov. 25, according to Southold Police.

Around 11:30 a.m., landscaping crews were cleaning a yard on Bayview Road when the leaves became stuck in the machine causing a small fire, according to a police report.

The flames spread to a small area, but the fire was contained and quickly extinguished by the Southold Fire Department, police said.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.
