Joan Hughes

Joan Hughes of Laurel died Dec. 20, 2013. She was 67.

She was born Joan Catherine Lonchar on Jan. 4, 1946, in Manhattan to John and Mary (Tokarchick) Lonchar. In 1963 she graduated from The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates.

Predeceased by her son, Nelson MacLeod, in 2006 and her sister Berdine LaMarca in 1980, she is survived by five daughters, Sharon (Thomas) Hilton of Greenport, Andrea (Douglas) Hausler of Charlotte, N.C., Deborah (Ronald) Lajda of Cutchogue, Laura (Edward) Mulligan of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mary MacLeod of Las Vegas, Nev.; her sister Mary Holden of Delray Beach, Fla.; one niece; two nephews; and six grandchildren.

Joan loved cooking, reading, swimming, walking her dog, Lady, and spending time with her family. She enjoyed helping the elderly as an in-home aide. She was a friendly and beloved member of the North Fork community for over 40 years.

A memorial service celebrating Joan’s life will take place Sunday, Jan. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue; friends are welcome to attend. Her remains will be laid to rest beside her son at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.
