Sound Avenue Mattituck

A 30-year-old Southold man was killed in an industrial accident at a property in Mattituck Thursday afternoon, Southold Town police said.

A worker was operating a skid-steer loader about 1:20 p.m. at the site on Sound Avenue near Lipco Road when the bucket fell off, striking the victim — identified by police as Andrew Leone — in the head, according to a police statement. Mr. Leone suffered “severe head trauma” in the accident and Mattituck Fire Rescue were called to the site, authorities said.

Update: OSHA investigating accident

Mr. Leone died at the scene from his injuries.

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office arrived to assist in the investigation.

Police said the incident is being investigated as an accident and said they do not believe the driver of the loader, Steven Romeo of Southold, is criminally responsible.
