Greenport Village treasurer to retire

Less than four years after she was first appointed Greenport Village treasurer, Charlene Kagel is stepping down from the position, Mayor David Nyce confirmed on Friday.

A former Southampton Town comptroller and Brookhaven finance commissioner, Ms. Kagel was hired in June 2010 after the then board voiced concern that the former treasurer lacked sufficient skills to handle the job, according to a previous Suffolk Times article.

Ms. Kagel, who only worked at Village Hall on Mondays, was hired to work a minimum of 20 days at an annual salary of $59,000.

Under her supervision Moody’s Investor Services upgraded Greenport Village’s credit rating, allowing the village to save on interest when borrowing funds in the future.

“With her expertise and her experience in municipal government finance we’ve had a great advantage,” Trustee Mary Bess Phillips said Friday.

The village’s current deputy treasurer, Robert Brandt, is slated to fill Ms. Kagel’s position and will be at Village Hall five days a week.

The board is expected to officially accept Ms. Kagel’s resignation during its next regular meeting on Monday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Third Street fire house.

Ms. Kagel could not immediately be reached for comment.
