Residents at risk of running out of home heating fuel or having their heat shut off this cold winter may qualify for additional federal funding recently released thorough the Home Energy Assistance Program, officials announced Monday.

To ensure people living in New York and other states don’t find themselves in danger during this year’s deep freeze, the federal government is expanding and extending its heating benefit program.

The federal government has released additional Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program funds, state officials said.

Eligible households in New York can receive their regular HEAP benefit for the season, and could also be eligible for an emergency benefit if they are in impending danger of running out of fuel or having their utility service shut off.

“Long Island has faced many difficult storms and extremely low temperatures already this season. The federal monies will provide those qualifying families with much needed help for their home heating bills,” said Senator Kenneth LaValle (R-Port Jefferson).

The HEAP is administered through the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).
