Girls Basketball: Nunez, Behrens lead Mercy to playoff win

Senior forward Fiona Nunez scored 16 points and freshman guard Mia Behrens added 12 as Bishop McGann-Mercy withstood a late rally to register a 49-46 victory over Port Jefferson in an out-bracket game of the Suffolk County Class B girls basketball tournament in Riverhead on Tuesday night. 

The Monrachs (11-6) broke open a close game by going on a 12-0 run to turn a one-point lead into a 28-15 advantage with 29.4 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Nunez (two) and Behrens (one) keyed the run as they combined for three 3-point shots during a 36.6 span at the end of the spurt.

Mercy took a 39-17 lead with four minutes remaining in the third quarter before the Royals (7-9) staged a comeback. The visitors outscored the Monarchs 22-6 over the final 9:37.

Courtney Lewis paced the Royals with 13 points.

The Monarchs visit Hampton Bays (16-2) in the Class B semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
