They are rarely recognized, unless it’s in the negative — which, lucky for us, rarely happens — so I’d like to start off this week by acknowledging our unsung heroes: our highway department crews.

Whether it be village, town, county or state, these guys have worked above and beyond the call of duty to keep us safe this winter. My thanks and appreciation to you all.

Suzie Bunchuck will be Greenport’s exchange student next year. But in order to take advantage of this opportunity, she needs to come up with one family (two would be better) in the district willing to host a foreign exchange student. Anyone in Orient, East Marion or Greenport who might be interested is asked to contact Lydia Wells at the school, 477-1950, ext. 1210.

A benefit for the gardens at Greenport and Southold schools will be held Sunday, March 2, at Greenport Schools from noon to 3 p.m. Here’s how it works. You bring an empty bowl and a spoon and sample from various local restaurants — as many and as often as you like. There will also be a bake sale, arts and crafts for kids, live music and a basket auction. Admission is $10 for adults or $5 for children.

Spring sports are right around the corner for GHS students. If you intend to play as a JV or varsity athlete, now would be the time to visit me in the high school office and pick up a sports contract. And, yes, you do need to fill out a new form for every sport you play.

The Have a Heart fundraiser scheduled for last Saturday at Peconic Landing was canceled due to the snowstorm. Stay tuned for the alternate date. As soon as I find out, I will let you all know.
