In honor of Heart Awareness Month, a small group of women gathered at Fitness Advantage in Southold last Sunday to knit and crochet red scarves for the Women Heart project, which distributes scarves to female heart patients as a show of care and concern.

According to Fitness Advantage owner Sarah Sirico, this year’s event drew twice the number of attendees as last year’s.

“We had five women knitting last year; this year we have nine,” Ms. Sirico said. “On top of that we have had many more donations of knitted scarves dropped off by women knitting at home.”

She added that the scarves are meant to be a symbolic hug to women suffering with heart disease.  “It’s all about giving comfort,” she said.

As of Sunday afternoon there were about 50 scarves waiting to be distributed to heart patients.  Last year there were a dozen.

To donate a scarf to Women Heart, drop it off at Fitness Advantage in Southold throughout the month of February.
