Southold Town Board considers installing bus shelter outside Town Hall

Bus Stop at Town Hall

Board members are weighing the idea of installing a bus shelter on Main Road outside Town Hall to accommodate county bus riders.

Mr. Russell floated the idea during Tuesday morning’s work session after long hearing repeated objections from town business owners and civic group members, who believe constructing bus shelters in front of their stores could create parking problems and hurt the town’s appearance.

“It is not easy to site these [bus shelters] because it usually involves private property,” Mr. Russell said during the board’s work session.

Instead, he suggested putting the bus stop on town-owned land to eliminate any confl ict with local proprietors.

Overall, the board was in favor of the notion.

“From a practical standpoint people need shelter,” Councilman Bill Ruland said.

In order to move forward, the board would need to receive permission from Suffolk County, which manages the bus service, Mr. Russell said.

“We have every reason to believe that they would accept this,” he said.

The board will consult the town’s engineers about the feasibility of the idea.
