Lifelong Greenport resident Fred J. Rempe died suddenly March 6 at his home. He was 86.
He was born June 24, 1927, in Greenport to Katherine (Kieliski) and Thomas Rempe and attended Greenport High School. He married Eleanor Hubbard. June 25, 1950, at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead.
For 32 years, Mr. Rempe worked as a supervisor at Orient State Park. He served for 59 years with Greenport Fire Department Standard Hose Company No. 4, receiving the Fireman of the Year award in 1999.
Family members said he enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Eleanor, Mr. Rempe is survived by his sons, Gary of Southold, Fred of Greenport, and Rick of Atlantic Beach, N.Y.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, John, Peter, Stanley, Frank and Vincent and his sisters, Lillian Mysilborski, Nettie Oates and Janet Harris.
A funeral service took place March 10 at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Burial took place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.
