The Southold Town highway department will begin its spring cleanup April 21.

During that time, crews will remove brush and leaves that have been placed in biodegradable paper bags at curbsides. Plastic bags will not be accepted.

The cleanup will start in Laurel and progress eastward until reaching Orient. Crews will pass through an area only once.

For those who miss the rotation or prefer taking brush to the Cutchogue landfill themselves, the town has extended the grace period during which residents can drop leaves and branches at the compost facility for free by an extra week. The grace period will now run from April 12 through May 18.

The extension is intended to help residents who get a late start on yard cleanup due to inclement weather, and to reduce the burden on highway crews charged with conducting the roaming pickups. Residents must have a current dump sticker to bring brush to the landfill.
