Baseball: Two locals pick up awards

New Paltz junior Shaun Hansen of Southold was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending March 16. Hansen batted .583 (7 for 12) in a 3-2 week for the Hawks. He also added five doubles, four runs scored and three runs batted in while fashioning a 1.000 slugging percentage. 

Hansen leads the Hawks in batting average (.440), doubles (7) and slugging percentage (.720).

Meanwhile, SUNY/Oneonta junior Steve Ascher of Cutchogue has been selected the SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week. In his only outing last week, Ascher was dominant in a 2-0 extra-inning victory against Clarkson University on Friday in the opening game of Oneonta’s Florida trip.

Ascher, who allowed only two hits in the game, struck out two batters in each of the first six innings en route to recording a career-high 15 strikeouts. It’s the second time in three starts that Ascher has recorded double-digit strikeouts.

Through his first three starts, Ascher is 2-1 with a 3.17 earned run average. In 17 2/3 innings pitched, he has recorded 32 strikeouts while allowing only 14 hits. He is holding opponents to a .212 batting average.
