Just 10 more days until Selection Sunday and then NCAA March Madness can begin. This is absolutely, positively my favorite time of year for sports.
Not to be outdone by the NCAA, Greenport High School has its own version of March Madness. As you read this, teams from Shelter Island, Greenport, Southold and Mattituck-Cutchogue are honing their skills to determine the teams that will represent each school at the Nofo Basketball Tournament on Friday, March 14, at GHS. Game time, I believe, is 6 p.m. Contact a Greenport Student Council member for further information.
If the pictures posted on Facebook are any indication, the second annual Souper Bowl soup fundraiser was a huge success, with proceeds benefiting the Greenport and Southold school gardens. A great big round of applause to the local restaurants that donated their time and talents (soup!) to make this the success that it was.
Jim and I had the honor of attending East Marion Fire Department’s installation of officers dinner this past Saturday. Congratulations to newly inducted Chief Frank Thorp III and his assistant chiefs, brothers Philip and Jason Doucett. Congratulations also go to “Fritz” Roemer, who was selected EMS Provider of the Year, and Pete Miller, who was named the EMFD Fireman of the Year.
Congratulations are in order for quite a few Greenport athletes this week. Senior Christian Angelson won his weight class in the county wrestling tournament and headed to Albany for the state tournament this past weekend. Senior Gavin Dibble (who joined the GHS 1,000 Club in his last game) received All-League and All-Conference honors in basketball while senior Austin Hooks got the nod for All-League and senior Brian Tuthill received All-Academic honors. Freshman Madison Tabor was named Rookie of the Years for girls’ basketball. Last, but definitely not least, senior Ryan Weingart was chosen Greenport Rotary’s Student of the Month for February.
