After two years of discussion, the Southold Town Board passed legislation Tuesday restricting parking in Orient.

The law bans parking at the intersection of Village Lane and King Street to allow emergency vehicles to pass safely, town officials said.

Over the last several months, Town Board members and the Orient Fire District commissioners have been working to craft a law that would simultaneously enable emergency crews to access the narrow roadway and provide sufficient street parking for residents.

The new law passed unanimously and had the support of Scott Harris, vice chairman of the fire district’s Board of Commissioners.

“I wanted to thank the Town Board for addressing this public safety issue,” Mr. Harris said before the vote, during Tuesday night’s public hearing on the issue. “It is something that was apparent to us for a long time that we had a real problem there.”

The town considered a similar legislation in June 2012, but tabled a decision after residents expressed concern about the proposed parking restrictions.
