The Town Board passed stricter regulations on where yard debris and branches can be placed on private properties that border Southold roadways.

Leaves and branches placed curbside on public rights of way have created a nuisance for town maintenance vehicles responsible for cleaning streets, officials said.

To solve the issue, commercial landscaping and tree removal companies will no longer be permitted to deposit any loads of branches or brush for removal in the right of way. Homeowners are now responsible for ensuring that workers haul any yard debris collected to the town composting facility in Cutchogue, according to the resolution.

Violators will be fined for illegal dumping.
