Girls Track and Field: King leads Clippers’ discus sweep

The Greenport/Southold girls track and field coach, Mike Gunther, has the gift of voicing a memorable phrase, often with some wit attached to it. “He came up with ‘just do it’ before Nike did,” said his wife, Carolyn.
One reporter referred to such choice quotes as “Guntherisms.”
But when the Clippers took to the Port Jefferson High School track on Thursday for their second dual meet in as many days, Gunther was being pragmatic more than anything else when he said, “Today is about surviving.”
Well, the Clippers did not win, but they did survive without injury in a 98-38 loss to Port Jefferson in the Suffolk County League VIII meet. Stephanie King led the Clippers’ sweep of points in the discus and teammate Claudia Steinmuller took first place in the shot put.
King, a sophomore, produced a winning throw that traveled 60 feet 2 inches. She was followed by Maia Mazzaferro (57-2) and Charis Stoner (53-8).
Steinmuller, a junior, threw the shot put 24 feet 1/2 inch. King was third at 22-2 1/2.
Juliane Van Gorden
did not have a bad day herself. The Clippers junior was second in both the 100 (13.9 seconds) and the 200 (28.3). Her teammate Kyla Smiley was third in the 100 in 14.7.
Second-place finishes were turned in for the Clippers (0-3) by Angelina Pagano in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:21.8), Stoner in the 1,500-meter walk (13:10), Julia McAllister in the 3,000 (14:58) and Heather Koscinch in the long jump (12-9 1/4).
The Clippers also received third-place points from Mairi Creedon in the 1,500 (6:51), Pagano in the 100-meter high hurdles (21.8), Emelys Villareal in the 400 (1:17.3) and Koscinch in the 800 (3:01).
Port Jefferson remains undefeated at 3-0.
